The Estonian e-Residency program has significantly bolstered the country’s economy, particularly through the contributions of e-resident entrepreneurs.

In the first half of the year, Estonian companies founded by e-residents paid a substantial amount in taxes, with labor taxes comprising 76% of the total, amounting to €22 million. The remaining 24%, or €7 million, was derived from income taxes on special cases, primarily dividends. Additionally, e-residents contributed €2 million in state fees, further enhancing the program’s economic impact.

Beyond taxes, e-resident entrepreneurs play a crucial role in the local economy by utilizing Estonian business services. Annually, these entrepreneurs contribute over €11 million to the economy through their engagement with local service providers.

This consistent influx of capital underscores the importance of the e-Residency program in fostering economic growth and supporting local businesses.

The first half of 2024 saw a significant increase in the number of foreign nationals obtaining e-resident digital IDs. Over 6,000 individuals received their digital IDs, reflecting a high approval rate of 93% from the 6,482 applications submitted. This period also witnessed the establishment of 2,450 new Estonian companies by e-residents, highlighting the program’s role in promoting entrepreneurship and business development.

Citizens of Spain and Germany were the most active participants, submitting the highest number of applications and founding the most new companies. This trend indicates a growing interest and trust in Estonia’s business environment from these countries, further solidifying the program’s international appeal.

Since its inception, the Estonian e-Residency program has facilitated the founding or co-founding of over 31,800 Estonian companies by e-residents. This impressive figure represents approximately one in five new companies established each year, showcasing the program’s significant impact on the country’s entrepreneurial landscape. Moreover, 38% of Estonian startups are connected to e-residents, emphasizing the program’s role in fostering innovation and startup culture.

The continued success and expansion of the e-Residency program are vital for Estonia’s economic future. By attracting a diverse group of entrepreneurs and fostering a supportive business environment, Estonia can maintain its position as a leading hub for digital innovation and entrepreneurship.
